- Abstract
- The purpose of the present study is to establish a lexical data of emotion vocabulary for Korean language education in terms of meaning and pragmatic use. The study focuses on the vocabularies expressing basic human emotions such as ‘joy’, ‘sadness’, ‘fear’, and ‘anger’.
KFL (Korean as a Foreign Language) teachers and students often have difficulties in teaching and learning emotion vocabularies due to the subjectivity and the abstractness of emotional experiences. One of the difficulties they face in the study, and use of those vocabularies, is that they don't have sufficient references which show the appropriate usage of the words and the typical contexts where the words are used. Thus, this study sought to identify the meaning and the typical contexts of the emotion vocabularies through the Korean native speakers' corpus analysis.
To this end, the purpose and the need of the study are claimed and the definition of emotion vocabulary is provided in the first chapter. Existing studies regarding emotion vocabulary are also examined in the first chapter.
In the second chapter, the concept and characteristics of emotions are examined in order to determine the scope of emotion vocabulary in the Korean language. The list of emotion vocabulary for the meaning and context analysis has also been created by consulting a couple of vocabulary lists for Korean education. Furthermore, in order to ascertain whether KFL learners are able to use appropriate vocabulary according to a situation, a questionnaire survey was conducted. Learners were asked to write which emotion vocabularies they thought were the most appropriate for the 10 given situations and then the results were compared to the answers of Korean native speakers. Overall, the results indicate that there is a significant difference in the appropriate use of emotion vocabulary between KFL learners and Korean.
The syntactic and semantic characteristics of the emotion vocabulary are suggested in the third chapter. The syntactic features of the emotion vocabulary are discussed in terms of double subject construction, subject constraint, and basic sentence structure. The semantic features of the emotion vocabularies are discussed in relation to the property of semantic connection and degrees of emotions. In addition, the property of non-intentionality, causality and passivity of the emotion vocabularies are also discussed.
In the forth chapter, meanings and typical contexts of the vocabularies of the four basic emotion types (joy, sadness, fear, and anger) are analyzed through corpus analysis. The contexts where each word is used are classified according to the cause and the object of the emotional experiences. In addition, the difference of meaning and distinctive contexts of the similar vocabularies within the same emotion vocabulary group is also described.
Lastly, a brief summary of the results of this study is presented. The meaning of the study, and suggestions for further study have been outlined in the fifth chapter.
