Synthesis of Core-crosslinked Block Copolymer Micelles via RAFT Polymerization

Abstract
The limited stability of micelles against dissociation was overcome by the covalent crosslinking of micellar cores. The amphiphilic block copolymers synthesized via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization, poly(ethylene oxide)-b-polystyrene (PEO-b-PS), poly(acrylic acid)-b-polystyrene (PAA-b-PS), still carry the trithiocarbonate group. Further chain extension can be carried out by restarting the polymerization in the presence of a new monomer. Therefore, this process was utilized to crosslink the micelles following the self-assembly of block copolymer in selective solvent. The self-assembly of block copolymers and the crosslinking reaction of micellar cores by
RAFT polymerization using crosslinker were attempted to occur in one pot.
