Abstract
In the age of globalization, we need to learn foreign languages, especially English, which is referred to as an international language. We have to learn not only the grammar of English but also the four skills of language behavior - listening, speaking, reading and writing at the same time. In addition, it is very important to improve the communicative competence, so to speak, the ability for daily communication.
The purpose of this study is to create an effective teaching method that uses movie as a primary resource to develop communicative competence.
Using movie materials in an English class is an effective way to improve communicative competence for the second language learner. To maximize the pedagogical potential of the class, teachers should focus on developing a good syllabus for the best lesson.
In this study, I suggest a procedure for designing a lesson plan and developing teaching materials with movie clips.
'What a girl wants' was chosen as a teaching material because it is played in authentic and practical English. To achieve the goal of showing the usefulness of movies as teaching materials, lesson plan are divided into the four parts; engage part, study part, study-practice part and activate part. The engage part is the stage which prepares students for a lesson. The study part presents topic, major expressions and idioms. The study-practice activity is the stage which makes students practice the study part. The activate part is the stage which helps students to understand the movie better.
Using this teaching methods, this study will help learners improve their English communicative competence. I also hope that the suggested lesson plan can help teachers to design their own teaching methods of film in their EFL classes.
