Abstract
Jane Austen, one of the representative English novelists of the early 19th century, took deep interest in the women's social status and marriage. This thesis aims to examine the various marriage views depicted in Pride and Prejudice and clarify Austen's views on marriage issues. Another purpose of this study is looking into the educational significance of Austen's novel and recommend to use it as teaching materials in class.
Pride and Prejudice presents four types of marriages. Jane Bennett is a beautiful and warm-hearted character though her judgment is sometimes faulty. The marriage of Jane and Bingley turns out to be a fortunate one not only because it is supported by Bingley's wealth, but because it is based on their genuine affection, similar sentiments and tastes. While Lydia is young and beautiful, she is thoughtless and indiscreet. As her marriage to Wickham is impulsive and emotional rather than rational, it would be impossible for them to maintain a happy married life for a long time. On the other hand, Charlotte who is not beautiful and has humble inheritance gets married to Collins who has no good sense but has a stable social position. Sympathetic as she is to the hard reality faced by poor women in a society ruled by money, Jane Austen relentlessly satirizes this marriage made only for material advantage. Elizabeth is an attractive heroine with brilliant wit and intelligence, and her marriage to Darcy is presented as ideal in Pride prejudice. Although they feel pride and prejudice against each other at first, they reach their moment of self-recognition and overcome their mistakes. Also, while Elizabeth does not simply succumb to Darcy's great wealth and high social position, she comes to terms with its value and importance, which means that she makes a more positive relationship with the society to which Darcy belongs, without degrading her moral values. It is emphasized that in marriage, genuine love and morality should be finely balanced with a sound sense of material elements.
With the purpose to enhance the students' interest and participation, their preferences ,as well as their language abilities, were considered in selecting the novel. It is essential for teachers to recognize literature as a useful means to help students deepen and broaden their emotional and cognitive domains to the personal growth. There are three different kinds of teaching plans in this dissertation. The first teaching plan is focused on different marriage views between Elizabeth and Charlotte. The second one is related to the discussion about Jane and Bingley's marriage. The third one is about Elizabeth's marriage view. It is highly hoped that these teaching plans will help teachers make language learning process more effective through various class activities.
