An Analysis of Vocabulary in the College Scholastic Ability Test

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the vocabulary in the College Scholastic Aptitude Test’s English reading section. This study is intended to help mid-low test scorers who are still suffering due to low ability in vocabulary knowledge. With the help of the Range Program, the researcher came up with the vocabulary data base, which is based mainly on the tests from the 2002 school year to the 2011 school year. After such actions were taken, the most frequently appearing, wide range vocabulary and word family were then analyzed to propose an effective method for test preparation.
The results of this study are as follows: first, based on the tests from the 2002 school year to the 2011 school year, the appearance of new vocabulary tends to increase as time goes by. Also, the texts of the test get longer. The overlapping words are functional vocabulary, such as articles, prepositions, gerunds and pronouns.
Second, this is the result of vocabulary research on frequency and range on the College Scholastic Aptitude Test by years. High frequency and wide range vocabulary by the second 1000 most frequent words list are behavior, information, during, essential, suddenly, especially, sports, attention, probably, message, skills, performance, clean, feet, slow, extremely, tend, inside, hurt, imagine, audience, original, quickly, soil, warm, weather, health, practice, and skin. Also, high frequency and wide range vocabulary by the words not in the first 2000 words of English but which are frequent in upper secondary school and university texts from a wide range of subjects include as areas, technology, culture, period, role, range, process, available, individual, environment, approach, individuals, energy, finally, computer, community, traditional, similar, economy, eventually, focus, jobs, area, complex, constantly, contrary, professional, and whereas. Vocabulary which doesn't appear on any of these lists but which has high frequency and wide range are climate, urban, career, tiny, frustration, Asia, Europe, species, primitive, and emotions.
Third, this is the result of vocabulary research on frequency and range on the College Scholastic Aptitude Test by type of questions. High frequency and wide range vocabulary by the second 1000 most frequent words list are information, during, suddenly, behavior, sports, attention, parents, performance, birth, clean, inside, probably, feet, hurt, imagine, solve, extremely, original, tend, weather, perform, rarely, and replaced. Also, high frequency and wide range vocabularies by the words not in the first 2000 words of English but which are frequent in upper secondary school and university texts from a wide range of subjects include as role, process, tension, identify, period, areas, technology, culture, energy, team, communication, computer, tradition, create, individual, similar, contact, image, classical, economy, focus, investment, jobs, major, range, requires, complex, context, cultural, professional, and whereas. Vocabulary which doesn't appear on any of these lists but which has high frequency and wide range are Korean, Korea, mirror, climate, and theater.
Based on the findings above, research was done on the Analysis of the Vocabulary Used in the College Scholastic Aptitude Test’s English reading section based on the Range Program, especially for low-grade students. This study proposes the study of high frequency and wide range vocabulary, word families to encourage the mid-low grade students who are eager to get better grades.
