Study on LCA(Life Cycle Assessment) to Seafood Production System
Abstract
The human race has enjoyed material affluence due to the industrialization in these days. But the industrialization has caused a lot of problems such as the depletion of resources, industrial wastes, air and water pollutions. Especially, the excessive use of fossil fuel and deforestations accompanied these industrialization resulted in the global warmings.
The world society became aware of the serious problems in the warming of the earth, and have made to deal with the climate change under leading by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
In the process of the movement, the Kyoto Protocol proposed the following manners such as greenhouse gas emission reduction, clean product system and carbon emissions rights trading to the nations in 1997.
Commercial fishing industry catch fishes by the combustion of fuel oil which directly effect on the greenhouse gas emission. Therefore fishing operation comes to connect with the restriction of carbon emission.
This studies how to reduce the carbon emission and environmental impact assessment is very important to not only the other industries, but also the fishery.
Life Cycle Assessment(LCA) which has been standardized by ISO and common use to evaluate all materials and entire process in production used to assess the environmental impacts on the industrial activities. Author also carried out to assess the environmental impacts on the fishing activities through the same method.
The purpose of this study is to assess the environmental impact by using the LCA method in Korean seafood production, and then compare it with the foreign commercial fishing industry and domestic meat production industry.
The carbon emissions from Large Purse Seine and Large Trawl Fisheries were 1.08kg and 1.42kg, respectively. These results lead us to the conclusion that Large Trawl Fisheries are more environmental impact than Large Purse Seine Fisheries. In addition, it was found from the LCA result that pork and chicken production was higher than Large Purse Seine and Large Trawl Fisheries in environmental impact.
