Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze parents' perceptions of and motivations for private English education. Acknowledging that parents have a great impact on the elementary school students' life, the present study dealt with the following research questions: 1) What is the current situation of the private English education for elementary school students? 2) What are perceptions of the parents of elementary school students regarding the determinants of private English education?
To this end, a total of 104 parents of elementary school students were asked to answer a questionnaire consisting of 33 items designed by the researcher. The data collected were analyzed using frequency analyses. The results could be summarized as below.
First, the parents were found to be deeply involved in English education of their children. Most children were receiving private English education because they thought the formal English education was not sufficient.
Second, parents were found to depend heavily on the private English education for their children's English studies. At the same time, however, they are willing to discontinue the private English education if formal English education is able to offer level-differentiated, quality instruction that matches that of the private English education,
Third, teachers should try their best to achieve utmost educational value. They need to keep training themselves and teach students in a creative and diversified way.
The elementary English education aims to teach students conversation and make them familiar with the English environment. It is hoped that the result of this study will be useful in resolving the problems of elementary English education. so the environment for English education in elementary school should be improved and the English curriculum must be reconsidered and reformed.
