An Analysis of Korean Translations of English Passives
Abstract
The purpose of this research is to find some specific types of Korean translations of English passives and to provide functional expressions for each of them. It is a usual way to translate English passives to Korean using actives. However, it hasn't been proved how frequently that kind of translation happens and what causes this practice. In this paper, 160 passives are analyzed from Rowling's (1998) Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and Meyer's (2007) Twilight and their Korean versions. Also, the study is supported by the concepts such as Giv?n's topicality and Ikegami's agentitivity. The English passives are translated into Korean passives(25%), actives(75%) and paraphrastical expressions. Korean actives are put into 4 subtypes: intransitives(48.1%), transitives(29.6%), adjectives and nouns(22.2%). Topicality leads both English and Korean to passives. However, many English passives are translated into Korean actives because English tends to include agentitivity, but Korean prefers to exclude agentitivity. Meanwhile, some Korean translated sentences have transitives with null subject since it is possible to omit a subject in a Korean sentence.
