Abstract

This paper examined the difference of language type between English and Korean in English-Korean translations. English is an object-dominant language which has S-V-O word order requiring more nominals and adjectives. On the other hand, Korean is an action-dominant language which has S-O-V word order using more verbs and adverbs. The result of my research shows that there are a number of word class alterations in English -Korean translations: The number of English nominals which are altered to Korean verbs is more than the number of English verbs which are altered to Korean nominals. I concluded this to be the reason it is natural to translate nominals in English into verbs in Korean. Therefore, translating adjectives in English into adverbs in Korean is also seen in the same situations. The second difference found in this paper is lexicalization. English and Korean have a different process of making a word to express a concept. Some nominals and verbs in English can not be translated to single nouns or single verbs in Korean. Additional other word classes such as nouns, verbs are needed. The characteristics of English and Korean such as language type or lexicalization are found not only in each sentences but also in English-Korean translations.
