Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the necessity of modulation according to pragmatic differences, in translating English non-questions into Korean questions. Expressive functions of questions are motivated by modulation. This study analyzes a parallel corpus consisting of the original English texts and their Korean translations. English constructions are categorized into eight different types: complement clauses, modal auxiliaries, the change of sentence structures, ironical expressions, expatiations, requests, repetitions, interventions. Questions have semantic features and expressions that are sometimes similar to statements or commands. Questions are not limited to matters of doubt, but also serve emphatic or euphemistic uses. Indirect speech as questions can be used to emphasize a speaker's intention or lighten a listener's mood.
