under the revised 7th national curriculum

Abstract
The purpose of the present study is to analysis the reading materials in the 7th grade English textbooks under the revised 7th national curriculum. For this study, three middle school English textbooks were randomly chosen and investigated in terms of topics and reading strategies. In analyzing the materials of the textbooks, two standards are employed: nineteen topics suggested in the revised 7th national curriculum and reading strategies based on the Oxford strategy classification system(1990).
The results of the topic analysis are as follows.
First, on average, the items of 9 out of 19 topics suggested in the revised 7th national curriculum have been used in the textbooks.
Second, even though a topic using in all textbooks based on one topic domain, the content of the topic was limited to such content.
Third, in topics, there were not ‘private life’, ‘gender equality, human rights and democratic civic life etc., arousing democratic consciousness’, ‘patriotism, reunification and promoting security awareness’ in any textbooks.
The results of the reading strategies analysis are as follows.
First, direct strategies were given a great deal of weight on the textbooks than indirect strategies in common in reading strategies pattern distribution. Most of all, cognitive strategies was presented much.
Second, scanning strategy had a large part of cognitive strategies.
Third, activity books took on a similar aspect with textbooks’ reading strategies ratio.
In conclusion, these findings suggest that teachers should consider all these criteria when choosing a textbook and reorganize the textbook in an eclectic way. Diverse topics and reading strategies should be presented in the textbook. Also, teachers can utilize other realia to motivate students to improve English reading abilities.
