An Analysis of Cultural Contents of the Fourth
Grader's Authorized English Textbooks

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the cultural contents of the fourth grader's authorized English textbooks in elementary school by studying how much current textbooks deal with cultural aspects and what kind of culture is being taught.
To achieve this purpose, first, the themes of the cultural content in the textbooks are analyzed according to the combined 3 thematic categories. Second, the cultural materials in the textbooks are analyzed by the criteria of the 7th English Curriculum of elementary schools in Korea.
The analysis of the cultural contents of the textbooks shows that behavioral cultural category is reflected the most. Therefore, it is necessary to handle more about material and ideal cultural categories in balance.
In addition, the cultural contents in the teacher's guide books are analyzed on the basis of the criteria of the 7th English Curriculum of elementary schools in Korea. According to the result, life styles and language culture in western countries are reflected the most. The cultural contents of the fourth grader's authorized English textbooks in elementary school are more detailed and diverse.
This study suggests that the 5th and 6th grader's textbooks should be published with sufficient and diverse cultural contents as well. To increase English skills and to provide a proper education of foreign cultures, more relevant cultural topics need to be provided for the students as well as teachers. We need to understand not only language itself but also its cultural contents for cross-cultural communication.
