An Analysis of Pre-Reading Activities in Middle School English Textbooks Based on Revised 7th National Curriculum
Abstract
An efficient reading is a process of reconstructing the meaning of the text by means of learners’ background knowledge. Pre-reading activity is motivating the learners to read texts in order to interest them in reading. This can help the learners to activate their prior knowledge on subject of the text or to provide their background knowledge on structure of the text in language.
The purpose of this study is to analyze pre-reading activities in middle school textbooks based on revised seventh national curriculum. For it, nine middle school textbooks of second grade are randomly chosen. In this study, to analyze the pre-reading activities carried in the textbooks effectively, three analytic criteria are set : providing vocabulary, activating schema, and providing reading strategy.
As a result of the analyzing, there are 248 pre-reading activities in chosen textbooks. In this data, activities in providing vocabulary type are 74, ones in activating schema type are 170 (145 content schemata, 25 formal schemata), and ones in providing reading strategy are 4. Pre-reading activities in activating schema account for 68 percentage of the total activities.
In conclusion, overemphasized in activating schema, pre-reading activities in the textbooks is not balanced. Therefore, for pre-activities can be carried out effectively, it should be needed to add pre-reading activities in providing vocabulary and reading strategy and to employ internet and multimedia tools except the material in the textbook.
