- Abstract
- Bildungsroman is a genre that illustrates the progress to reach toward the world of maturity through a person's external and internal experiences. Since Bildungsroman is a genre of literature that reflects the western society where an autonomous modernization was implemented, such a genre was difficult to develop in our society that experienced heteronomous modernization. Especially, growth of women was outcast amid such historically great arguments as the male-dominated society, the Japanese colonial period and Korean War. The historically huge arguments vanished and those outcast women's growth, which stayed in a marginal sector, started to be focused after the 1990s when recognition of personal ego was emerging, and lots of novels that contained identity of women were rushed to publication. The increase of Bildungsroman shows the intention to establish the identity of ego based on increasing interest in ego when Bildungsroman is regarded as a genre to explore the relation between ego and the society. Therefore, the objective of this thesis is to find out the characteristics of women's Bildungsroman shown in the 1990s, targeted at Gift of Bird of Hee-kyung Eun, Isolated Room of Kyung-sook Shin and While the Black Sugar is Melted of Kyung-rin Jeon.
Gift of Bird of Hee-kyung Eun depicted Jin-hee's growth process, who was grown-up in a disillusioned world. In Isolated Room of Kyung-sook Shin, the protagonist is illustrated in such a way that her past wound was recovered and made up with the past herself through writing after she was grown up. While the Black Sugar is Melted of Kyung-rin Jeon showed a grown-up process of Su-ryun who wants communications with others and a real growth.
In the case of said works, the gap between psychological ego and experimental ego is small. It shows that women's growth is not made at a time but made through communications with the past and the present. Therefore, women's Bildungsroman contains lots of reminiscences and shows no growth or suspended growth, a half-growth. Also, such a coexistence is described that women's lives in the male-dominated society as well as personal problems are illuminated and their lives are embraced by internalizing others' experiences into the protagonist's life. Women's Bildungsroman since the 1990s is not a huge argument of a society but presents a model that looks at other's life and embraces other's and its experiences
to make an internal growth. Also, the images of women, who try to establish their own world not their fathers' world, are shown. This study has a meaning to highlight not a simple personal growth but women's lives who are trying to discover their own identities in this male-dominated society.
