교육과학기술부는 외국어 학습목표의 중요한 부분으로 문화교육을 제시하고 있다. 이는 외국어와 문화는 떼려야 뗄 수 없는 중요한 관계이며, 외국어학습뿐 만 아니라 외국어의 적절한 사용능력배양과 외국어학습을 통한 한국문화의 이해에도 중요한 역할을 하기 때문이다. 공교육 과정에서 이러한 외국어와 외국문화학습에 가장 중요한 학습 자료는 교과서이다. 여러 영어 교과서들이 이러한 추세에 발맞추어 개정되어 왔지만 여러 가지 미흡한 부분을 보였으며, 기대치에 미치지 못했던 것이 사실이다. 2007년 개정교육과정에 따라 2010년에 새롭게 개정, 발행된 영어 1 교과서에서는 어떤 개선된 측면과 보완되어야 할 측면이 있는지를 문화교육을 통한 외국어학습의 관점에서 몇 가지로 나누어 살펴보았다. 첫째, 문화란 무엇인지, 영어문화란 무엇이고 그 범위는 어떻게 되는지, 그리고 우리가 흔히 혼용해서 사용하는 영어와 외국어의 차이점에 대해서 분석하고, 문화교육을 통한 외국어학습의 필요성과 방법에 대해 살펴보았다. 둘째, 10종의 영어 1 교과서 독해지문을 대상으로 하여, 각 단원에서 소개되는 내용들의 소재들을 Bierstedt 의 모델을 수정하여 만든 문화소재 분석표를 이용하여 분류하고, 어떠한 내용의 문화요소들이 다루어지고 있는지를 분석했다. 이를 통해 2007년 개정교육과정에서 목표로 하고 있는 문화교육이 영어 1 교과서에 얼마나 잘 반영되어 있는지를 살펴보았다. 셋째, 영어 1 교과서 독해지문에서 다루어진 소재들의 국가별 분포를 한국문화, 영.미 영어권문화, 보편문화, 기타문화, 비교문화의 5가지로 항목으로 구성된 문화배경분포표를 만들어서 분석해 보았다. 그 결과, 교과서의 내용들이 일정한 기준 없이, 무분별하리만큼 임의적으로 문화요소들을 다루고 있고, 영어교과서임에도 불구하고 지나치게 보편문화의 내용들을 다루고 있는 것을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 결과들에 대한 수정에 있어서 교육과학기술부의 책임과 역할이 큼을 지적하고, 교실에서의 문화교육을 통한 외국어 학습을 위한 방법들과 개선책들을 제시하였다.

Abstract

The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology suggests that culture education is one of the most important parts of foreign language learning. This is because a foreign language and its culture are inseparable. Furthermore, it is important for both foreign language learning and the proper use of foreign language and it plays a crucial role in the understanding of Korean culture through foreign language learning. The most important learning material of public education for culture education is the textbook. A lot of English textbooks have been revised according to this idea but there have been mistakes, errors in them. And they have not yet reached a satisfactory level. The newly revised English 1 textbooks published from 2010 according to the 2007 revised education course have been analyzed in this study to find out which parts have been improved and which parts are to be improved in view of several criteria of foreign language learning through culture. First, this study defined the meaning of culture, English culture and its range. It analyzed different meanings between English and foreign which Koreans tend to use mingled, and suggested the necessity of foreign language learning through culture education and its methods. Second, this study analyzed culture elements of the reading parts of 10 English 1 textbooks by revised Biersredt culture analysis model. The result showed how much culture education objectives proposed by the 2007 revised education course are reflected in English 1 textbooks. Third, with a cultural background model which is composed of Korean, American-british, universal, other, comparative cultures, this study analyzed which culture the reading parts of English 1 textbooks belong to. The results showed how indiscriminately, without a standard, textbooks introduce topics and culture elements. Though they are English textbooks, universal culture takes too high of a portion. This study concludes that the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology should take responsibility to correct those errors and suggests how to improve English textbooks and its methods for English education through culture.
