Abstract
Shin Sung-il. He is one of the most famous movie stars in Korean film history. This thesis studies about his popularity. Why is he star? Why people attracted in him? What is his attraction?
These questions including other field. Because cinema reflect on society and culture. This is the study for Korean film history of 1960s~1970s, and at the same time, analysis of society of korea, and they have what connection with. Through this, it can find general public who loved Shin Sung-il, what they saw in him.
In 1960s~1970s, Shin Sung-il's golden age, "Modern" become the most important topic in Korea. At that time, Korean modernization was not naturally. We have rapidly modernized ourselves in the last of whole Korean history. 19th. April, 1960, April Revolution for democracy, and next year, 16th. May, the military coup carried out by Park Jung-Hee. And then, Korea under his personal dictatorship, modernized.
Shin Sung-il became a young star, because of greatest hit by (Kim Ki-duk, 1964). Youth cinema representation of modern. After the film shows, same sort of films made as the "boom" says Lee Young-il. That means Korean youngs dreamed about attitude of defiance against irrational existing society, and wanted new valuable-free love, development culture of new western civilizations. That desire expressed through falling in love with elder women or ruling class girl in films.
After the youth cinema boom, the Modernism Film as (Kim Su-yong, 1967), and the Hostess melodrama (Lee Jang-ho, 1974), his character accompanied by hopelessness and feels a sense of futility in the world. So they can't protect even their love. That means in the middle of high speed of modernization, common people feels frustrated that they can't be included developed, new, modernized world.
Compulsory modernization by government, produce ill effects. In the wave, Shin Sung-il's star image-young star image and "sister boy" image- makes appear people that they suppose to success in the modern. And he shows dark shadow of modern. Representing failed in it, that frustration, isolating and hurtful people in westernization city, opposition side of modern in Korea.
