Abstract
There are lots of repetitions in Hyun-hwa Lee's plays. Repetition is a form and content that establish his works. This article is to examine the repetition shown in Hyun-hwa Lee's plays, focused on the early works Who are you?, Hush, hush, hush!, and the middle of Cadenza, Shanssitgim (Exorcism), and Bulgabulga.
In the chapter 3, his early and middle works were analyzed by dividing into the repetition of each scene and of language. In Who are you?, the repetition of an accident and lines created the images of a standstill of time and showed a sense of alienation among people of the modern society. Hush, hush, hush! reduced the tension of the play due to the maximization of a fear of the play and the simple repetition of the lines.
His middle works induced changes through repetitions to make lots of aesthetic results compared to the early works. Cadenza causes audience not only to come to their senses with repeated tortures but also to create a sensitive fear with segmented lines. Shanssitgim (Exorcism) also showed a process to come to senses, and the repetition is a mechanism to intensify audience's fear and anxiety. Bulgabulga is such a work that makes the most aesthetic completion of his repetition. The external and internal play and the consciousness process of each character are repeatedly connected in a delicate manner, and the repetition has a close relation to the characters' changes and formation of the subject to create a aesthetically great result.
In chapter 4, aesthetics that has the repetition of Hyun-hwa Lee's plays was reviewed again through the obsession of repetition, based on the work analysis of the chapter 3. The writer who had no choice but to surrender in such a violent country and personal relationship is changed to a leading character who has a power as a writer. Therefore, Hyun-hwa Lee treated himself from the trauma of the 1970s' dictatorial government. Like this, Hyun-hwa Lee's works can be said to implement a subject by relying on the structure of repetition through continuous agony and experiments to have a great result aesthetically. However, since his agony as a writer was stopped, his late works did have an aesthetic and subjective result beyond the structure of repetition.
