Abstract

The purpose of this study is discuss the differences between English subordinate clauses and their Korean translations. This study focuses on the adverb clauses, especially 'when'. According to the stream of information, an adverb clause can be placed flexibly in English, while the main clause must be preceded before the adverb clause in Korean. The subordinator 'when' is translated into five patterns: i) verbal suffixes; ii) nouns; iii) relativizer; iv) adverbs; v) deletion There are also three kinds of ways of translating English main-subordinate clauses into Korean: i) following the order of the English sentence (i.e. subordinate-main clause); ii) reversing the order of the English sentence (i.e. main-subordinate clause); iii) forming of the inserted sentence (i.e. put the subordinate clause into the main clause).
