Abstract

Abstract As a sport with artistic characteristics, figure skating draws upon important elements such as costumes, music, melody interpretation, and choreography. The combination of figure skating music and costumes is an important influence on scoring, moreover, it forms some images and characteristics of the athlete. The purpose of this study is to consider and analyze the correlation between figure skating music and costumes. The study mostly focuses on the main international competitions from 2008 to 2010, such as the Winter World Figure Skating Championships, Four Continents Figure Skating Championships, Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final and gala shows of a single female and male and female pairs, ice dances of the medalists. The concepts and characteristics of figure skating music were examined collected the literature quotes Internet sites, photos and video, clips through the homepage and internet sites. Focusing on the medalists of the main international competitions from 2008 to 2010, following the analysis results of figure skating by genre of music, the differences among classical music, pop music, movie music, musical music, folk music have been classified, and according to the features of music genres, the differences of items, colors, details and accessories of clothing were brought out. Classical music is the most commonly selected genre of music due to familiar melody and suitability with artistic expression. In classical music, figure skating costumes reflect the musical atmosphere of the story a black outfit is mainly used to express dark, gloomy or mysterious scenes while white, purple or light gray are used with soft and lyrical melodies. Popular music is also catching on therefore, figure skating costumes reflect the modern and trendy mood. In the case of Funky club music and Electronica, the costumes are reflect a glam and punk mood and appeare as active and casual designs. The music used in film is fitted with the characteristics and personality of the hero character. For instance, the character of a spy wears sexy and splendor clothing while other costumes recreate metallic materials to show the virtual reality of the future. Finally, Folk music focuses on the tradition of a country. In the case of tango, there are many costumes with gorgeous flowers fitting for the sensual melody. Flamenco music with dances of lilting and fast rhythms, Inspire costumes mainly composed of wide skirts, floral decoration and red clothes symbolizing the passionate Spanish spirit. In addition, various items of clothing, colors, materials, details and accessories in Australia's native traditional costumes, American country music and free expressions of costumes can be seen as well. Depending on the features of music genres, figure skating costumes have been changed of items, colors, materials, details and accessories. Thus, the close correlation between the story of figure skating music and atmosphere has been analyzed. This study contributes to improve the completion of programs which is completed through the development of figure skating costumes design that is regarded specially for the artistic value.
