The optimization and parametric study on bend of serpentine flow-field in PEMFC using CFD
Abstract
Recently, fuel cell study is active with increasing interest of New and Renewable energy in the world. PEMFC(Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell) is low temperature fuel cell and it is applied for transportation or RPG(Residential Power Generating) system. PEMFC has many problems like water management and durability. Then many researcher are studying for overcoming PEMFC problems. In PEMFC flow-field design, experimental study has many problems like economical problem and long time requirement, so many reseachers perform numerical simulation in first stage.
In previous study, distribution of high temperature and low current density is expected due to low heat transfer at region near bend in serpentine flow-field. This phenomena bring about a blazing fire of MEA and nonuniformity of substance distribution. PEMFC has lower durability finally. For this reason, we performed parametric study of bend in serpentine flow-field using CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics). Through this study, we analyzed an effect of changing parameters of bend to PEMFC performance.
(1) First of all, we validated our results of numerical simulation and results of previous experimental study for confirming reliability. (2) And we performed numerical simulation with changing parameters of bend. Then we studied a effect of changing parameters of bend to PEMFC performance. (3) And we performed optimization with parameters of bend and channel using Taguchi methode. Then we performed numerical simulation of single cell applied optimizing results. And through comparison with base case and optimizing case, we confirm applicability of this study when we will perform design of single cell in PEMFC.
