Design and Implementation of Environment Monitoring Middleware for the Underground Space Management based on the USN
Abstract
The underground space has exposed the bad dust and air pollution because of the characteristic of the closed space unlike the buildings and the facilities above the ground. Moreover the problem of the ventilation occurs in the underground. In this case, the related systems for managing underground need to be connected with high technology control systems installed in the underground to support the comfortable space and to adaptively response the emergency situations.
This paper describes the real-time environmental monitoring system for supporting the comfortableness in the underground space using the ubiquitous sensor network. The monitoring system includes the functions that it measures the temperature, humidity, dust, and carbon dioxide emissions on real time and is connected with the automatic control system to alert whether the measured values are over threshold or not. Now, the existing systems with the functions are implemented on the automated controller facilities based on the wire system like programmable logic control (PLC). However, the systems have the problems such as the mobility of facilities, the burden of the cost of the cable installation, and the extension of the networks. For solving these problems, we propose a middleware system to support the self configuration and to manage the sensor network devices. The proposed middleware system consists of the management of sensor devices in the low level and the application programming interfaces (API) in the upper level. Our system has advantages of the cost reduction and the compatibility in constructing systems by using low price and micro-miniature sensors.
